Toilet roll Inspiration #1 - Superhero Cuffs 🧻🧻🧻

Now that you’ve used all that toilet paper … 🤔 … whatever you do, don’t throw out the toilet rolls! I collect all of my toilet paper rolls. Would you believe that these are the most versatile and sought after craft item? I’ve literally had kids fighting over toilet rolls in my workshops. Once you get their imaginations going, they can get ruthless in their pursuit of creation!! 😂

Toilet rolls are something I know we definitely all have access to so I’ll be sharing some really simple ways to put them to good creative use to inspire imaginations and stories! These are always a massive hit in my workshops!

Creating Superheroes is one of the best ways to get kids to unleash their originality. It allows them to imagine that anything is possible and that it's okay to believe in the incredible!

What you’ll need:

  • Toilet rolls - at least one per child but ideally 2 each.

  • Literally any craft bits and pieces you have e.g. paddle pop sticks, coloured or shiny paper, glitter, stickers, fuzzy balls, goggly eyes, pipe cleaners, literally anything. If you’re feeling extra generous you can even google search and print out superhero comic graphics, like ‘pow’, ‘wham’ etc. as a nice little addition!

  • And of course glue and / or sticky tape.

1. Get kids inspired: To get kids inspired, we do a bunch of activities that get them in the Superhero frame of mind. I’ll be doing a post on Superhero activities later on, but for now, just a conversation should work. Ask them:

  • who their favourite superhero is?

  • if they could have any superpower, what would it be?

  • what would their superhero name be?

  • What would their superhero outfit look like?

(Otherwise, depending on how your day / patience is going, just get them to watch a superhero show or movie. My kids are obsessed with Henry Danger at the moment! 👍)

2. Get making: Once their imaginations have started going, pull out the toilet rolls and craft stuff. Cut the toilet rolls from bottom to top so that they can slot around their wrists, then let the kids loose decorating them. Voila - they have supersonic superpower superhero cuffs!

3. You can take this a step further by: getting them to create their superhero identity and / or write a superhero story - look out for a post on Superhero activities yet to come!

Stay tuned for the next instalment of toilet roll inspiration.
